Eat Cake in Bed with Heidi Cannon
Posted on March 13th, 2009 No commentsWhilst in York a couple of weeks ago I came across a fabulous boutique full of products with real character called Boho Belle (3-5 Minster Gates). They had oh-so-desirable and unusual collections of clothes and accessories but what really caught my eye were the cushions dotted around the shop. They were divine! After a bit of prodding about on the internet I discovered Heidi Cannon was the creative force behind the cushion’s Bedcrumb label.

Heidi Cannon
Her work was of particular interest because it answers the growing desire from consumers for products that have time and care invested in them via skilled craftsmanship and clever detailing. Products imbued with genuine enthusiasm and emotion. Part of our efforts to address environmental and sustainability issues is to encourage clients to manufacture and sell products that consumers will want to keep forever. Products that encourage a sense of attachment and allow consumers to cherish their purchase. In our recent trend reports we have also highlighted an emerging playful interest in etiquette, ladylike styling and decorum. The revived interest in Afternoon Tea and Tea Parties is a perfect example of a re-establishing of bygone customs and rituals. Bedcrumb’s products address all of these wants, needs and desires beautifully!
www.bedcrumb.co.uk is a Home and Fashion accessories website where you can treat yourself or someone special. Think feminine self indulgence, quirky accessories, uniqueness and vintage tea parties! Heidi was kind enough to take some time out of her schedule to tell me more about her work and creative process:
VR: What inspires your work?
HC: I am inspired by a wide variety of things, but I especially love colour and charmingly random ladies, birds & creatures and those imperfections on otherwise perfect things which make them somehow more perfect!
VR: How has the style of your products developed?
HC: The majority of my work is based on my illustrations. I love to draw and paint and wanted a creative outlet for these where I could combine my ‘magpie-like’ collecting skills….. So I get my illustrations digitally printed on fabric and work into them with new and vintage trims and accessories. I use these on my cushions and scarves. I also put together mis-matched vintage tea party sets (which make fab gifts…especially with Mothers Day fast approaching!) and sell these with a hand-made napkin and a great cupcake recipe, packaged in pink net, ribbon and my signature ‘Dot’ peg doll.
My tags all have a ‘Dot’ peg doll, named after the fabulous Dot Cotton for her totally fab wardrobe and love of the mustard cardi and vintage brooch combo!
VR: What are you working on at the moment?
HC: I am currently putting together new Marilyn Scarves. I’ve just had some fab new illustrations printed so I am busy adding these to vintage scarves. Also I’ve just added some new accessories to my site – Eliza Brooches and Vivien Purses – so I am busy putting orders together for Stockists and my site. I am stocked in a handful of lovely boutiques/shops but it would be great to hear from new places who feel my work would fit in with them.

HC: Enjoy browsing and buying and please remember to be self-indulgent, eat cake in bed & forget about the crumbs!
