Top 5 Dining Room Trends for 2013

As summer approaches, thoughts turn to throwing fabulous after work cocktail parties and weekend get togethers at home.  Now is the perfect time to refresh the dining areas of your home to get ready for the summer celebrations so, take inspiration from our top 5 dining room trends for 2013/14.

In no particular order:

1. Futuristic Glow

As we continue to journey into the unknown, Designers explore a Sci-Tech look.  The palette?  A halo of ultra-violet, searchlight blue, an alien green, and cold mint with hi-definition neon accents.  Super glossy surfaces with a shellac shine are key: hi-gloss lacquer, perspex, acrylic, transparent PVC layers, and silvered surfaces deliver a futuristic sheen.  White provides the clinical backdrop that grounds this look and keeps it from becoming colour overload, representing futurism and clarity.

Choose an ultra-modern table with clean lines in a hi-gloss white, set it off with a statement piece of lighting to create a coloured glow.  Work on a stage of pale grey and white, with concrete effect flooring to create a super contemporary aesthetic.

Our S/S 2013 trend ARTificial details more ideas on how to successfully work this look.

2. The Orient

Our fascination with the Orient continues as we are seduced by a deeply exotic mood, drawn-in by the splendours of the Far East fused with the mysterious decorations of the Middle East.  This decadent, indulgent styling offers an intense glamour, summoning up a dark languid atmosphere with a slightly risqué undertone.

Strike an exquisite balance between lavish metallics, dangerously dark peacock shades, and seemingly opposing faded pastels: jade, apricot blossom, and mauve mist for an elegantly complex styling that is neither excessive or too pretty.

  Noura Central in London

Be inspired by the Tazmania Ballroom in Hong Kong and London’s Noura Central to create your own glamorous dining theatre with richly coloured velvet seating (teal to purple shades are a major colour trend well into 2014/15) and a long, solid dark wood, or dark glass topped, table.

3. Retro Revival

This Spring/Summer have some fun and inject a vintage Rock ‘n’ Roll sexiness as the diner look evolves.  Create a Fifties Motel vacation, inspired by the palm tree lined, Art Deco adorned boulevards of Miami with a laidback LA vibe.

Go for graduated colours and ombres, matte, opaque surface finishes, and a kitsch styling.  Graphic patterns are in: hearts, birds, cars, fruit, and girls, as well as Rock ‘n’ Roll motif and bold geometrics.

Achieve this look in one of two ways: an invigorating palette of intense blues, flamingo pinks and oranges, with the season’s all important mint green.  Go for bench seating or retro booths.

Or, work a more rebellious, Rockabilly look of black and white with red accents such as red leather dining chairs.

For more details on this look, read about our S/S 2013 trend, Motel, in Anthony’s Now, New, Next posting here.

4. New Normal

For a moment of stillness in our overfilled modern lives, precise styling and an extreme unadorned, pared-down purity, delivers clarity and calmness.  A retro Scandinavian influence is felt in a palette of subdued colours of sand and cork, blonde wood tones, and an abundance of brown, all working alongside a calming blue and green.

For dining furniture choose pure forms that are simple, smooth, and solid.  Marquetry/parquet constructions work well within this trend, be inspired by Lee Broom’s Parquetry collection.

5. South American Ranch

As we get into the Autumn/Winter of 2013/14 we see a South American flavour combine with the exotic tribal trends of previous seasons; there is a greater emphasis on the use of natural materials and raw finishes and we see the colours change as a darker, heavier, spiced palette is introduced.

Key 2013 Metallic Colour: Copper

js1024_zak2Back in September 2012 our team mentioned an exciting metallic shade as part of our TENT London show review that we knew was going to be important in the coming year. Well here it is in detail, the new rose-tinted copper colour for 2013. It has a softer sheen and warmth with a strong metallic appearance.

Copper is no longer banished to under the floorboards and is being seen on the catwalks, as well as in new Home Product collections and Interiors.  This age-old metal has been redefined and now reflects a rich, sumptuous look without being as flamboyant as Gold. This colour should be used boldly, it should stand on its own.

The copper shade manages to give both a futuristic feel as well as a  glamorous and classic aesthetic.  It looks equally amazing when patinated or polished. Once simply a conductor of heat it is now a conductor of style!

Top 10 Colour Trends for 2013

2013 bannerHappy New Year to you!  Thankfully it transpired that the 2012ers were mistaken and the Apocalypse was not nigh after all.  Hoorah and welcome to 2013 … a year when the world of design stretches out towards extreme newness whilst also ensuring the romance of the past is never out of reach.

This year colours both invigorate and calm us: fluoro’s meet diffused pastels; iced coloured-metallics gives the year it’s most alluring surface effect; intriguing tinted nudes offer us a New Normal; faded vintage tones draw strength from mysterious opium den ultra-darks; audacious brights announce retro-revivals; tribal tones shout from the depths of lush rainforests.  Mature, optimistic, intense, dynamic and sophisticated … colours are set to be more nuanced and complex during 2013: chip bannerSo let’s begin our year of blogging with a rundown of some of the key colours for 2013.  We’ve taken the colour chips below from a selection of our Spring/Summer 2013 and Autumn/Winter 2013/14 trends for Interiors.  Whether you’re a Designer, Manufacturer, Retailer or Marketing Guru these colours will help to make your work relevant this year.  If you’re a Journalist or Blogger you’re welcome to share this info with your readers & followers by linking to this page or cutting & pasting the info…all we ask is that you please credit Scarlet Opus as the source and link back to us.  So in no particular order…

col1aINTENSE CELERY GREEN/YELLOW:

We spotted this colour being used by just a few Designers towards the end of last year as an all over mono, but we forecast it will be much more widely applied this year.  You’ll be amazed how many other colours it works brilliantly with including deep pinks as you can see on our Origins trend board!

col2CONCRETE GREY:

It’s an on-trend material as well as a key shade for 2013.  Concrete shakes off its ugly reputation thanks to brilliant innovations and brave applications by Product Designers.  Stick to light-to-mid shades (with a matt finish) and simply think of it as you would any other neutral colour when pairing it with other colours.

ULTRAVIOLET:

Transitioning from hazy pink to lilac and into the realms of violet, this intangible colour can be used to give products an otherworldly incandescence.   It is most effective when applied to products made from transparent materials.  Purchase our ARTificial trend board as a visual guide for your own work and to understand the best colour combinations.

col4ICED SPEARMINT:

Tinged with a hint of blue this green is super-refreshing.  It works well when applied as a solid to products with a retro 50s/60s styling, acting as a bridge between playful pastels & brights (see our Motel trend board), or as an accent in futuristic and dark ’galaxy’ inspired surface pattern designs.

col5aAPRICOT BLUSH:

Apricot, Peach, Coral … call it what you will, but this pinky orange makes its presence felt in several trends during 2013 (including our Orient trend).  It works equally well with delicate pastel or bright fluoro pinks, lilacs, pale jade greens, plum shades, dark peacock colours or greys.

col6GUCCI PURPLE:

Decadent dark purples and heady wine tones introduce unabashed glamour and opulence to room schemes during 2013.  One of the most interesting shades was used by GUCCI for their Autumn/Winter catwalk carpet colour.  For furniture & flooring especially, this sumptuous shade is a must!

col777PETROL BLUE:

Dangerous ‘dusk to dawn’ ultra-darks provide 2013 with its most intriguing and complex hues.  Though they appear to be almost black, these twilight shades are in fact tinted with blue, green or purple.  The most important shade from this family is Petrol Blue -  possessing both blue & green nuances, it looks great with our next colour!

col8ROSE-TINTED COPPER:

When it comes to metals or metallic effects, 2013 is the year to favour copper.  From actual copper pendent lights to furniture upholstered in copper-coloured velvet (like the gorgeous Houston chair by Munna we spotted at TENT during London Design Festival), make this your metal of choice.

col9DARK INDIGO:

Deep and mysterious yet super-stylish and soothing – from purple tinted indigo to luxuriously velveteen sapphire – 2013 is a big year for rich blues.  They should give a sense of tranquility, certainty and steadfastness – always projecting subdued glamour and integrity.  So Chic.

col10ABSINTHE EMERALD:

The perfect shade of Green for 2013 it encapsulates the historical ’Eclectic Collector’ trend for Interiors and the bohemian ‘Dandy Gentleman’ trend in Fashion.  Plus the drink is enjoying a renaissance.  After decades of prohibition it’s time to be seen sipping Absinthe this year!
